FSC can provide companies with tools for risk aversion. When companies process and trade FSC certified products, FSC has provided assurance of supply chain traceability and legality of timber sources. Although such guarantees have not yet met all the requirements of the EU timber regulations, certified products have a lower risk than uncertified products in terms of currently available solutions. When companies need to conduct risk assessments of non-certified materials, operators with FSC-CoC certification can conduct risk assessments of such materials through the FSC Controlled Wood Identification Program within their certification.
It should be noted that the FSC does not stipulate that the FSC-CoC certificate holder can only produce FSC labeling products, so the certificate itself cannot be used as a proof of the legality of the timber. Only products that have been FSC-labeled or declared in accordance with the certification process are characterized by low risk. FSC also does not provide any guarantee of legality for non-certified products.
When a company makes material changes to wood or wood products, or has physical or legal ownership of wood/wood products, they need to pass the FSC Chain of Custody certification. include:
Forest food: honey, maple syrup, nuts, etc.
Paper products: pulp, paper, printed packaging.
Wood products: furniture, plywood, MDF, flooring, toys, handicrafts, log processing, etc.
