The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is an international, voluntary, and comprehensive product standard that sets out third-party certification requirements for recycling content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions. One of the goals of GRS certification is to increase the use of recycled materials in products.
The GRS certification eliminates the hazards posed by its production.
Principles of GRS certification:
The GRS standard is suitable for recycling products with a content of 20% or more. Certain exceptions may apply, please consult the Textile Exchange Accreditation and Certification Process for concession processing information, as well as any validated recycled materials that can be applied to any supply chain. Scope This standard verifies the chain of custody of recycled materials in accordance with the “content declaration standard”.
The GRS standard includes consumer-facing labels; only products that have been certified by the seller in the last business-to-business transaction are eligible.
Only products with at least 50% recycled content meet the product-specific GRS label.
The GRS standard establishes social and environmental principles standards when dealing with GRS certified products. It also limits the use of hazardous chemicals in the processing of GRS products; it does not involve the presence of chemicals in the recycled materials or chemicals that may be present in the final GRS product.
The goal of GRS certification is to unify the definition of multiple applications, trace back the recyclable input materials, and provide a tool for customers (brands and consumers) to make informed decisions. Reduce the harmful effects of production on people and the environment, ensure more sustainable recycling and disposal of materials in the final product, and promote innovation in quality problem solving methods for the use of recycled materials.
