The Higg Index is a suite of sustainability measurement tools developed by Cascale (formerly the Sustainable Apparel Coalition). This guide focuses on the cost and timeline of the Higg Facility Environmental Module (Higg FEM) verification — the part of the program that carries a fee. All figures below are drawn from the Cascale Higg FEM Verification Protocol (Version 1.5, November 2024, effective January 1, 2025).
How Much Does a HIGG Index / Higg FEM Verification Cost?
The single most important point about Higg cost is this: Cascale does not publish a fixed verification fee. According to Section 3.6 of the Higg FEM Verification Protocol, "Fees associated with Verification shall be negotiated and agreed upon between the organization requesting the Verification and the Verifier Body."
In practice, this means there is no official price list. Your cost is set in a commercial agreement between your facility and the Cascale-approved Verifier Body (VB) you choose. The protocol deliberately leaves pricing to the market rather than fixing a rate.
What Drives the Verification Fee?
The protocol gives Verifier Bodies a clear cost driver: person-days. Appendix A of the protocol states its person-day guidance exists "to assist a Verifier Body (VB) determine the estimated number of person-days for the purposes of quoting cost (if applicable) and scheduling."
In other words, the more verification time your facility requires, the higher the quote. The protocol caps and floors that time as follows:
| Verification type | Person-day limit |
|---|---|
| Offsite verification (incl. reporting) | Must not exceed 2 person-days |
| Onsite verification (total on-site) | Between 1 and 3 person-days (shall not be less than 1; shall not exceed 3) |
| Any verification (onsite or offsite) | Shall not be less than 1 person-day |
One person-day corresponds to 8 hours of working time for one Verifier (excluding lunch and breaks unless required by law). A "person-day" is therefore a unit of verifier effort, and it is the basis a VB uses to build its quote.
The protocol also provides non-prescriptive maximum person-day recommendations by facility profile to help VBs scope the work:
| Facility profile | Max onsite person-days |
|---|---|
| Light water user (drinking/domestic only) | 2 |
| Has onsite wastewater treatment plant | 3 |
| Tracks energy and water separately (vertically integrated) | 3 |
| Wet processes and onsite chemical use | 3 |
| Previously verified facility | 2 |
| Facility Foundations verification | 2 |
These are ceilings, not quotes. The actual number of person-days — and therefore the fee — is agreed between you and your chosen VB.
Does the Worldly Platform Charge a Separate Fee?
The Higg FEM self-assessment and the verified module (vFEM) live on the Worldly platform, which Cascale authorizes to provide and manage the data systems. The Verification Protocol does not state a fixed platform or subscription price, and no published fee schedule appears in the official documentation we reviewed. We therefore do not quote a platform fee here. When budgeting, treat platform access and VB verification as two separate cost items and confirm both directly with Worldly and your VB.
HIGG Index Verification Timeline 2026
Higg FEM verification follows a defined process flow. The protocol sets several concrete timeframes:
- Assignment: The VB shall assign Verifier(s) to the Higg vFEM on Worldly no later than 10 working days before the verification start date.
- Verification plan: The VB shall communicate a verification plan to the facility no later than 10 working days before the start date (including person-days, calendar days, daily hours, and contact details).
- Verification itself: Conducted onsite or offsite. Onsite has no fixed duration (only the 1–3 person-day guidance); offsite must not exceed 2 person-days including reporting.
- Reporting: Onsite and offsite results must be entered into the Worldly platform within 14 business days of completing the verification.
- Annual cycle: A facility shall have only one verified Higg FEM per year. Higg FEM operates on an annual cadence, with quantitative data scoped to the full calendar year (January 1 to December 31).
For the FEM2024 cadence (calendar year 2025), the protocol limited verification to Higg FEM Level 1 questions only. Cascale refreshes the FEM cadence each year; confirm the current year's verified-question scope with your VB before scheduling.
An offsite verified assessment can be shared with your Worldly connections, but its results may not be shared publicly or via the Cascale Higg FEM Performance Communication toolkit. If you choose offsite, you also cannot switch to an onsite verification within the same assessment year.
How to Budget for Higg FEM Verification
Step 1: Confirm your module scope
Decide whether you need a full Higg FEM or Facility Foundations (first-time users only). Facility Foundations is smaller and carries a lower person-day ceiling, which generally means a lower fee.
Step 2: Choose onsite or offsite
Offsite verification is capped at 2 person-days including reporting, making it the more time-bounded option. Note the public-sharing restriction before deciding.
Step 3: Shortlist Cascale-approved Verifier Bodies
Only Cascale-approved Verifier Bodies may conduct a valid verification. Request written quotes from two or three VBs so you can compare person-day estimates and rates.
Step 4: Share your facility profile
Give each VB your Site Info (processes, wastewater treatment, chemical use, energy/water tracking) so they can apply the Appendix A person-day guidance and quote accurately.
Step 5: Negotiate and agree the fee in writing
The fee is negotiated between your organization and the VB. Lock the person-days, rate, and what is included (travel, reporting, corrective-action follow-up) into a written agreement.
Step 6: Plan the calendar
Build in the 10-working-day assignment and plan windows plus the 14-business-day reporting window. Remember you get one verified FEM per year, so schedule early enough to meet brand deadlines.
Who Is Involved (and Who Sets the Price)?
- Cascale — owns and governs the Higg Index; sets the rules but not the fees.
- Worldly — provides and manages the platform where the FEM and vFEM live.
- Verification Program Manager (VPM) — Sumerra, the oversight organization for the verification program.
- Verifier Body (VB) — the company you contract with; it negotiates and sets the verification fee with you.
FAQ: HIGG Index Cost & Timeline
Q: Is there an official Higg Index / Higg FEM fee schedule?
A: No. The Cascale Higg FEM Verification Protocol states that verification fees are negotiated and agreed between the organization requesting verification and the Verifier Body. Cascale publishes no fixed price list.
Q: How is the Higg FEM verification fee calculated?
A: The fee is built around verification effort measured in person-days. The protocol caps offsite work at 2 person-days (including reporting) and onsite work between 1 and 3 person-days. Your VB translates the agreed person-days into a quote.
Q: What does one person-day mean?
A: One person-day equals 8 hours of working time for one Verifier, excluding lunch and breaks unless required by local law. It is a unit of verifier effort used to scope and price the work.
Q: How long does Higg FEM verification take?
A: Offsite verification must not exceed 2 person-days including reporting. Onsite verification has no fixed duration but is guided to fall between 1 and 3 person-days. Results must be entered into Worldly within 14 business days of completion.
Q: How far in advance should we book?
A: The VB must assign verifiers and share a verification plan no later than 10 working days before the start date. In practice, book earlier to secure your preferred VB and meet brand deadlines, since each facility may have only one verified FEM per year.
Q: Is Higg FEM a certificate with a fixed price?
A: No. Higg FEM is a self-assessment plus verification, not a pass/fail certificate. The Opening Meeting guidance explicitly states Higg is "not a pass-or-fail assessment/audit" and has no minimum score. You pay for verification services, not for a certificate.
Q: Can I reduce the cost?
A: Options that lower person-day scope include choosing Facility Foundations (if eligible), selecting offsite verification (capped at 2 person-days), and having a complete, well-documented self-assessment ready before the VB arrives. Always confirm eligibility and public-sharing implications with your business partners first.
Conclusion
Higg FEM verification cost in 2026 is not fixed by Cascale — it is negotiated between your facility and a Cascale-approved Verifier Body, and it scales with verification effort (person-days). Budget by scoping your module, picking a verification type, collecting VB quotes against your facility profile, and agreeing the fee in writing. Plan around the 10-working-day assignment window, the 14-business-day reporting window, and the one-verified-FEM-per-year rule so you hit your customers' deadlines.
