Suppliers across the apparel, footwear, and textile value chain are asked every season to complete the Higg Facility Environmental Module (Higg FEM). If your team is new to it — or just needs a quick reference — this FAQ answers the most common Higg FEM questions in plain language, grounded in Cascale's Verification Protocol and the FEM4.0 Scoring Methodology.
Higg FEM FAQ: Common Questions Answered
The following questions target the "People Also Ask" panels and the queries our clients raise most often. Each answer is based on Cascale's published FEM documentation.
Q: What is Higg FEM?
A: The Higg Facility Environmental Module (Higg FEM) is a self-assessment tool that helps facilities measure their environmental performance across energy use, water, wastewater, air emissions, waste, chemicals, and environmental management. It is part of the Higg Index, developed by Cascale (formerly the Sustainable Apparel Coalition), and completed on the Worldly platform. The FEM gives each facility a 0–100 score and a structured way to benchmark and improve environmental impact year over year.
Q: Who develops Higg FEM, and what is the Worldly platform?
A: Higg FEM is developed by Cascale (formerly the Sustainable Apparel Coalition), the nonprofit behind the Higg Index. Facilities complete the assessment on the Worldly platform (formerly Higg.org), which hosts the Higg Index tools. Third-party verification is overseen by the Verification Program Manager (VPM), Sumerra, which manages the verification program on Cascale's behalf.
Q: What does Higg FEM assess — what are the sections?
A: The FEM covers eight sections: Site Information & Permits, Environmental Management System (EMS), Energy & GHG Emissions, Water, Wastewater, Air Emissions, Waste, and Chemical Management. Site Information & Permits is a profile and compliance section; the other seven are the scored environmental impact areas. Each legal business entity and each separate physical location requires its own FEM (Verification Protocol, §3.2.5 / §3.2.6).
Q: How is Higg FEM scored?
A: Each of the seven scored sections is marked out of 100 points, and the total Higg FEM score is also on a 0–100 scale. The seven sections are weighted equally — about 14.29% each — and if a section is not applicable, its weight is redistributed equally to the remaining sections (about 16.67% each). There is no pass/fail threshold, but missing a valid operating license or a required environmental permit zeroes the entire score (FEM4.0 Scoring Methodology).
Q: What are Higg FEM Levels 1, 2, and 3?
A: Within each scored section, questions are organized into three levels. Level 1 covers awareness and basic management systems (25% of the section score). Level 2 covers setting baselines, targets, and tracking improvements (50%). Level 3 covers leading, aspirational practices (25%). Under the "Level Advancing" rule, a facility cannot earn Level 2 or 3 points unless it has answered all scored Level 1 questions positively first (FEM4.0 Scoring Methodology).
Q: Is Higg FEM mandatory or required by law?
A: Higg FEM is not mandated by law. It is typically requested by brands and buyers as part of their supply-chain sustainability programs. Whether a facility must complete it depends on its customers' requirements, not on regulation. Many global apparel and footwear brands ask their suppliers to complete and verify the FEM annually.
Q: How much does Higg FEM cost?
A: There is no published or fixed Higg FEM fee. The Verification Protocol states that verification fees are negotiated between the requesting organization and the Cascale-approved Verifier Body (§3.6.1). Cost has two parts: a Worldly platform access or subscription fee (paid to Worldly) and the negotiated verification fee. Cascale also administers a separate Higg FEM Verification Access Fee for members and Verifier Bodies. Facilities should request quotes from several Verifier Bodies.
Q: What is the Higg FEM verification timeline?
A: Higg FEM follows an annual cycle. Facilities enter a full calendar year of quantitative data (January 1 to December 31) on Worldly (§3.2.3), then initiate verification. Onsite verification typically runs 1–3 person-days, offsite up to 2 person-days, with a minimum of 1 person-day (§3.7 and §9.1.2). Verified results must be entered into Worldly within 14 business days of completion (§4.7.2).
Q: What is the difference between onsite and offsite verification?
A: Both are allowed, but they differ in cost and what you can do with the result. Onsite verification requires the verifier to visit the facility and is required if you want to publicly communicate your Higg FEM score. Offsite verification is conducted remotely (via email, photos, and web conference) and is typically lower-cost, but its results cannot be shared publicly (§3.5.2.1). The current Higg FEM 2025 cycle supports verification of Levels 1, 2, and 3.
Q: Who can verify a Higg FEM assessment?
A: Only Cascale-approved Verifier Bodies may verify a Higg FEM assessment. Verification is managed under the program overseen by the Verification Program Manager (VPM), Sumerra. Facilities choose a Verifier Body from Cascale's approved list and request a quote and availability directly from them.
Q: Is Higg FEM the same as the Higg Index or the Higg MSI?
A: No. The Higg Index is the broader suite of tools from Cascale; Higg FEM is one module of it, focused on a facility's environmental performance. The Higg MSI (Materials Sustainability Index) is a different Higg Index tool that assesses the environmental impact of materials. They are related but measure different things.
Q: How do I get started with Higg FEM?
A: Start by ensuring your facility has Worldly access, then complete the self-assessment for the full calendar year (January 1 to December 31) across all eight sections. Next, contact several Cascale-approved Verifier Bodies for quotes, decide between onsite and offsite verification (and which levels to verify), and book early — a Verifier Body should be assigned at least 10 days before verification. Finally, have results entered into Worldly within 14 business days.
Conclusion
Higg FEM can feel complex the first time, but the essentials are straightforward: it is a Cascale-developed self-assessment on Worldly, scored 0–100 across seven environmental areas, verified by an approved Verifier Body on a negotiated fee. Getting the timeline and verification type right early saves both cost and stress.
